“I bet you weren't paying (proper) attention, as usual."
"I was! Slow down, Brewster, please."
"There's nothing to worry abo... Aaah!”
―Brewster and Wilson

Braking Brewster is the third episode of the first season.

Plot

Brewster and Wilson collect some hopper wagons. After some practice with the hopper doors that drop the load, Dunbar tells them to roll to the depot for today's assignment and also tells them that it is harder going downhill with a heavy load, so they must go slowly. However, only Wilson listens, with Brewster not paying attention. Before Wilson and Brewster take their hopper cars to the Quarry, Wilson sees Morgan putting sand on the oil that he slipped on. They take the blue tunnel. After leaving the depot, Wilson accidentally takes the right tunnel, which goes downhill, when they should've taken the left tunnel as Vee told them.

Upon arrival at the Quarry, Wilson struggles to keep the hopper doors shut, so Brewster kindly lets Wilson have some more practice while filling up his hopper wagon. Brewster takes all the rocks, leaving Wilson to take the dust. Once they make their way home, Wilson goes slow like he's supposed to, but Brewster goes faster. Wilson tries to tell him that it's harder downhill, but Brewster doesn't listen to Wilson. Instead, Brewster thinks Wilson is just talking nonsense, but Wilson tries to tell him what Dunbar said earlier, which is true. But Brewster starts going too fast because of his heavy load of stone. Luckily, Wilson gets in front of Brewster and opens his hopper doors to release the dust, which Brewster brakes on, giving him grip on his wheels again. Wilson tells Brewster that he remembers Morgan using sand to give him a grip on the slippery oil, and Brewster apologizes to Wilson for not believing in what Dunbar said to him, and then, they get back home safely. Brewster then tells Dunbar that he learned his lesson about going downhill.

Trivia

  • This episode marks the first of a few things:
    • The first appearances of Old Puffer Pete, Emery, Chatsworth and Karen.
    • The first appearance of the Rocky Ridge Quarry.
    • The first episode to be co-written by Kate Fawkes.
    • Going by production order, this is the first episode of the first season and the first full-length Chuggington episode ever produced.
      • This is evident in many things within the episode; for example:
        • Prototype switches are used throughout the episode.
        • Parts of the Depot are coloured differently and/or have different shading.
        • The colour palette on Vee's screen has a slightly lighter hue than other episodes.
        • Brewster's right and left headlights emanate a faint orange tint.
  • Going by the European airing order, this is the fifth episode of the first season.
  • This episode was CBeebies' 8th most viewed programme ever with 722,000 viewers.

Goofs

  • In the opening shot of the episode, Koko's model slightly glitches out.
  • In the shot of Wilson and Brewster's wheel trucks while entering the Blue Tunnel, some of the switches have been cut in half.
    • Additionally, Brewster was not coupled up to the hopper properly.
  • Karen asks Wilson and Brewster if it's their first time with hopper cars, and Wilson says yes, but Wilson and Brewster pulled hopper cars in Can't Catch Koko. This is likely due to that fact that Braking Brewster was produced before Can't Catch Koko, and the episodes likely happened in that chronological order.
  • Brewster's yellow lining on his rear is miscoloured blue when he rolls under the hopper shoot.
